14/2004 Minimal Flows on Compact Manifolds
Maria Alice Bertolim, Ketty A. de Rezende, Gioia M. Vago

In this paper we compute the minimal number of non-degenerate singularities that can be realized on some manifold with non-empty boundary in terms only of abstract homological boundary information. We specify the index and the types (connecting or disconnecting) of the singularities realizing the minimum. The Euler characteristics of manifolds realizing the minimum are obtained and the associated Lyapunov graphs of Morse type are described and shown to have the lowest topological complexity.

13/2004 The CPLD Condition of Qi and Wei Implies the Quasinormality Constraint Qualification
Roberto Andreani, José Mario Martínez, M. L. Schuverdt

The Constant Positive Linear Dependence (CPLD) condition for feasible points of nonlinear programming problems was introduced by Qi and Wei and used for the analysis of SQP methods. In the paper where the CPLD was introduced, the authors conjectured that this condition could be a constraint qualification. This conjecture is proved in the present paper. Moreover, it will be shown that the CPLD condition implies the quasinormality constraint qualification, but the reciprocal is not true. Relations with other constraint qualifications will be given.

12/2004 Multiple Minimal Nodal Solutions for a Quasilinear Schrodinger Equation with Symmetric Potential
Marcelo F. Furtado

We deal with the quasilinear Schr\"odinger equation $-\mbox{div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u) + (\lambda a(x)+1)|u|^{p-2}u=|u|^{q-2}u$, $u \in W^{1,p}(\real^N)$, where $2 \leq p < N$, $\lambda>0$ and $p

José Plínio O. Santos, Milos Ivkovic

We present interesting combinatorial interpretations for the Fibonacci numbers in terms of colored partitions obtained by finite versions of two identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type. New formula for the Fibonacci numbers is given

10/2004 Influence Diagnostics for the Grubbs's Model
Víctor H. Lachos, Filidor E. Vilca-Labra, Manuel Galea

In this paper we consider applications of local influence (Cook, 1986) to evaluate small perturbations in the model or data set in several measuring devices, assuming Grubbs's model. Different perturbation schemes are investigated and an application is considered to two real data sets.

9/2004 A Relation Between the Domain Topology and the Number of Minimal Nodal Solutions for a Quasilinear Elliptic Problem
Marcelo F. Furtado

We consider the quasilinear problem $-\mbox{div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u)+ |u|^{p-2}u = |u|^{q-2}u$ in $\Omega$, $u=0$ on $\partial \Omega$ where $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^N$ is a bounded smooth domain, $1 < p < N$ and $p

6/2004 A Boundary Cusp Singular Point and Reversible Vector Fields on the Plane
Ronaldo A. Garcia, Marco A. Teixeira

In this paper we describe the bifurcation diagram of a boundary cusp of codimension three, i.e, a Bogdanov-Takens singular point in the boundary of the semi plane $\{(x,y)\in {\mathbb R}^2:\; x\geq 0\}$. This study is applied to the analysis of the behavior of singularity of the germ of vector field $X_{0}(x,y)=(y,2x(x^4+x^2y))$ in the class of reversible vector fields. We classify the generic three parameter families of reversible vector fields $X_{a,b,c}$ with $(a,b,c) \in ({\mathbb R^3},0)$ and $X_{a,b,c}=X_0$.
